Daniel Hazelbaker –
These fans are amazing. I bought this 52 inch version on Amazon and a number of the 44 inch variants from a bricks and mortar store (since the 44 inch version wasn’t available on Amazon).First, these things move a ton of air. They have 4 speeds (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%). I usually run this thing at 50% and that is enough to feel like a solid breeze on me. At 75% it feels more like I’m sitting in front of an old box fan. At 100% it was making loose papers on the floor flutter. Even at 100% it is still whisper quiet. You can hear it to be sure, but frankly most of the noise is the sound of the air moving rather than hearing the motor.Second, smart control HomeKit support. These things have native HomeKit support (and others, but I’m an Apple user so HomeKit is what matters to me). They also do not need a hub or anything, they just connect to your WiFi. And, as a HUGE bonus, this is the first “HomeKit compatible” device I’ve installed that did not require me to create an account on their own website just so I can attach it to my HomeKit setup. Please, manufacturers do this more. I have actually returned products because they require me to create an account with you just to attach the device to HomeKit. In the Home app, these can be configured to show as two different devices (a light and a fan). Both can be dimmed. Well, the fan doesn’t actually dim but you know what I mean. You get control of the 4 speeds via a dimmer style control, thus the 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% speeds. One complain about the HomeKit integration is that when I tell Siri to turn that fan on, it turns it on to 100% rather than just turning it on the the last speed it was at like the wall switch does. This could be an issue with either the fan or HomeKit. Since it’s the only HomeKit fan I have I can’t say which is the problem, but it’s a bit annoying. Not that I use Siri for that much because…Third, the wall switch. This is basically the ONLY fan I found that includes a useful wall switch. Usually what you get is a remote control that magnetically snaps onto their custom wall plate which means two things. 1) You are likely going to lose the remote and 2) you have to attach their ugly wall plate to your wall with double sided tape. Not so here. This thing comes with a REAL wall switch that goes in your wall (complain: it still runs on a small battery, but I can live with that). The wall switch fits in a standard Decora plate, meaning you can simply remove your old hard-switch and replace it with this switch and put it back in the same wall plate. This is especially helpful when you have a dual or triple wall plate. Now, for what is on the switch. You get 7 buttons – but don’t worry, it’s not a complex thing. That is another thing I love about this. The switch is something I can explain to my parents for them to operate when they come visit. The top half contains 3 light buttons. An on/off button and then up and down buttons. The bottom half contains 3 fan buttons. Again an on/off button and then up and down buttons. This means nothing fancy like having to slide your finger on a touch surface to turn the light or fan on. Just push the button with the light bulb to turn on the light and push the button with the fan to turn on the fan. Simple enough! And by the way, these are tactile buttons. Meaning, you can feel the button click in when you push it so you know it worked. Finally, at the very bottom is a “master on/off” button. It basically kills power to the fan. This is helpful to quickly reset the fan if it stops responding to the switch. That said, I have had this fan for 2 months and it has lost contact twice with the wall switch. Actually, only the light part lost contact – the fan part still worked. Which leads me to believe it might be more an issue with this particular unit. None of the other fans of this family have had this issue (one 44 inch and one 52 inch, both fine). To fix it, I simply clicked the master button off and back on and it gave it 2 seconds to reset and then it worked fine.I would ABSOLUTELY buy more of these and in fact plan to buy 2 more for the final 2 bedrooms.
