Harbor Breeze Hydra 70 Inch Brushed Nickel Indoor Ceiling Fan Light Remote Control

  1. Just me

Very nice and big fan, completely silent at lower speeds, and has breeze mode which is nice, it is not easy to install due to its size and the height it goes at, I had to rent a ladder from HD to get to the ceiling. I prob got the wiring wrong, or it interferes with the remote operation, because I can not use it correctly from the wall switches, but it seems to work fine using the remote to control it. The light is warm and adequate, but its brightness or color can not be changed. Saved 1000 bucks compared to similar-sized fans from high-end decor stores.

I’ve had this fan now for about 7 months. It serves its purpose but probably wouldn’t buy again or recommend until the remote issues are resolved.Pros:- Large size- Nice finish- Great air flow (used a 24″ downrod)Cons- Feature rich remote that fails with simple tasks (like turning off). The remote allows for six fan speeds, optional sleep or away timer for 2/4/8 hours, the ability to switch between summer and winter modes, a light switch, and an peculiar breeze mode that automatically varies the rate of speed to simulate an outdoor breeze, but the remote has syncing issues with the fan, so the speed that’s (briefly) displayed on the remote may not be what setting the fan is on. In addition, the on/off button appears to do nothing. While I can successfully get the fan running with the remote, I can’t shut it off. For that I have to turn off the wall switch, largely defeating the purpose of having a remote. Very frustrating and hoping there’s an alternative remote (hint hint Harbor Breeze). I’d love to report they contacted me with a solution. Fingers crossed. FWIW, I’d be perfectly happy with the traditional 5 button remote (3 fan speeds, fan on/off, light on/off), then I could just use “the beast” when I need to switch between summer/winter modes.- Strange startup “dance”: When you turn on the fan, it will complete about half of a rotation in the opposite direction before coming to and stop and then spinning in the expected direction. It’s not hurting anybody but it makes me wonder about its longevity.- Build-in light: It’s great that it has one, but it’s not very bright / doesn’t fill a room and as others have pointed out, it would be nice to be able to choose between daylight, bright-white and soft-white.- Price: This could easily be one of the Pros– it’s not a cheap fan but I wouldn’t really want a super bargain 70″ fan spinning above my head.Sorry I used so many words. It’s like something just upset me 😉

Update 4/3/22I’m rating this 4 stars simply because it isn’t perfect…but it’s so close (if only 4.9 were an option). It operates as intended and moves a LOT of air. So much so that I feel the lowest is too much. To be specific, this isn’t a wind that will cause dry eyes; it’s a gentle, relentless air flow that eventually feels chilly. Even in the summer, the lowest, standard setting is a bit too much. This means its only used when I’m overheated and turned off once I’ve cooled off. The fluctuating speed setting, that simulates a natural breeze, is a great addition. It nearly redeems this almost perfect fan. With double the standard number of settings, I’d expect a “normal” slow setting would be possible. However, this fan’s slowest setting is what I’d expect from other fans’ medium setting. So, in my opinion, this fan starts at medium and goes up to super fast (at least one “notch” above the typical high setting, maybe two).In simple terms, any warm air being circulated from our ceiling is being moved too quickly to avoid a wind chill effect. This may also have to do with the circumstances of our room as it is one of the less effectively heated/cooled rooms in the house. The thermometer in the room didn’t change, either, so there likely was little chance for improvement. But, while this fan may not be great for our winter use, I believe that in the summer, it will be a hit.Aside from the basic air moving qualities, it produces no noise that I can perceive and is almost perfectly balanced straight from the box (I was able to notice a very minimal wobble at full speed – although most will (likely) not see it. Another feature that’s likely to be overlooked (as it’s seldom used but very important) is the reverse switch being included on the remote. As a large fan, it’s likely it will be mounted in large rooms with high ceilings. This makes flipping a conventional switch on the fan body “inconvenient” to nearly impossible in some settings but with this fan, it’s literally in the palm of your hand. Speaking from experience, I’m glad I won’t have to drag out a large ladder or take ill-conceived chances when the seasons change.Another feature I’m looking forward to trying (in the summer) is the fluctuating speed setting that randomly varies the speed to stimulate natural breezes. The fan has dimmable LED lighting for efficiency, timers for the fan, away settings for the light to simulate activity in the house while away, and delayed switching to allow you to leave with light on and have it turn off minutes later. If the developers are reading this, I’d suggest at least one or two slower fan options and an optional, conventional style wall switch to avoid the need to find a misplaced remote. Make it smart home compatible for an added plus.
