I bought this as a replacement for a failing fan in my wife’s office. Wifi connectivity to voice assistants was a primary selling point for me, as she is disabled and cannot easily reach the light switch panel. The first fan I purchased, according to the installer, was defective. The motor would not run. The second one is working fine. The fun started when I attempted to connect the fan to my network. The instructions in the observably named SIMPLEconnect app don’t match the parts in the box. There was no included remote. I went online and eventually discovered how to reset the fan through the switch panel, but then I had to activate HomeKit on my iPhone in order to finish the setup using the Hunter app. So, the fan was finally connected to HomeKit, which I do not use. Then I tried getting it to talk to Alexa. No joy. I got the skill enabled and connected to my Amazon account. Alexa couldnt find the device.I went back to the Hunter app. My first clue that something didn’t work should have been that the fan did not show up. But I went to the settings and tapped “Connect with Alexa.” This took me back to the Alexa skill page, where I noticed a button for “Manage home devices”. Maybe now we’ll get somewhere. Not so fast! The first time the Alexa app crashed. The second time, I was presented with a a black screen with progress dots that never ended. On the third attempt, after finding that the fan disappeared from the Home app as well, I started over and finally achieved success. That’s with little thanks to Hunter, where I found another set of incomplete instructions online. It seems the company has not taken care to make sure they have good instructions that are specific to the model of fan one is installing.Once I finally got it working, it behaved as expected. Alexa found the two new devices (fan and light separately) and one can control them by using their assigned names, which default to “Hunter fan” and “Hunter light.” If you want to be able to turn them on and off together, put them into a group or set up a scene. Alexa can adjust the speed of the fan and the brightness of the light, though the range of the light seems rather limited. At first we thought the light couldn’t be changed, but after dark it became obvious that we had in fact dimmed it earlier in the day and Alexa responded to the command to turn it back to maximum. I did not attempt a reverse command to the fan, but typically one only does that twice a year if at all.Hunter does have a reputation for quality, and I really like the older one I’ve had in my office for 20 years. I’m hopeful that this one will do as well. I’m sure that as the technology matures they will work the kinks out of the setup.
